Why is the Hadley Avenue intersection being reconstructed as an interchange before the Highway 120/Century Avenue intersection?
The Century Avenue intersection upgrade is not funded at this time and the Hadley interchange is fully funded. The total project cost estimate for an interchange at Century Avenue is $30 million. The Minnesota Department of Transportation made interim improvements at the Century Avenue intersection in 2015 (extending turn lanes, accessible upgrades, and a new traffic signal.

The corridor study did not recommend which intersection should be improved first and acknowledged that constructing both interchanges at the same time would cause difficulties in construction detours, road closures, and access. Building the Hadley Avenue interchange first will benefit drivers in the future when the Century Avenue interchange is built.

A grade separated crossing of the Gateway Trail at Hadley Avenue is also a benefit of the Hadley Avenue Interchange Project. A pedestrian bridge was built over Century Avenue in 2012.
