The project will repair poor and failing windows at the Historic Courthouse, planned after a 2018 inspection of the Historic Courthouse roof, exterior walls, windows, and doors. The facility exterior is on the National Register of Historic Places, so replacing the windows with modern windows is not an option. A request for quotes to make needed repairs was sent to 13 contractors from the Minnesota Historical Society specialist directory, and Peterson Construction was the only contractor that responded. The specialized historic restoration work includes removing glass wood stops, scraping off old caulking or sealant, and repairing it. Existing glass will be glazed, and sashes painted; deteriorated sills or trim will be restored, and loose caulking will be removed and re-caulked. The project will also open all operational windows, restoring rotted or deteriorated areas in multiple window sashes, and repair missing or broken ropes before existing hardware is re-installed. The project has been approved by State Historical Preservation Office, Minnesota Historical Society, and the Stillwater Heritage Preservation Commission. Funding will come from a state grant and the Historic Courthouse Restoration Fund, which is funded by fund-raising events.
