The American Probation and Parole Association designates this week each year to recognize the work of pretrial, probation, and parole officers around the country. This year, the theme is “Restoring Trust – Creating Hope.” Working together makes for stronger bonds between colleagues, community partners, and with those under supervision. To be successful, officers need skills from law enforcement, counseling, and teaching disciplines. In their work, they touch all aspects of the justice system. Their unique ability to hold clients accountable and give them hope for their future is a testament to their dedication and service. The County Board approved a resolution recognizing the work of Washington County probation and parole officers, and all Community Corrections Department staff. Their work with clients leads to a safer community for all residents of Washington County. The resolution recognized the essential part of the public safety system that the employees play, their role in upholding the law with dignity, and the cost-effective services that they provide to county residents. The Audit Advisory Committee, established in 1984 and made up of the board chair, the county administrator, and two citizen representatives, provides assurance to the County Board concerning the internal and financial controls of the county and provides greater independence and objectivity to the audit functions. The committee meets quarterly, and reviews reports from the county’s internal auditor of tests of disbursements and the use of purchasing cards. The County Board receives those quarterly reports. The annual report stated that the information provided by the internal auditor shows internal controls are in place to ensure that the county’s disbursements are paid in a timely and accurate manner. The internal auditor also does random, unannounced cash counts of change funds in the county. The county’s external auditors from CliftonLarsonAllen participated in three of the audit committee meetings in 2017. At the first meeting, the audit manager reviewed the progress of the 2016 audit, and during the second meeting conducted the audit closing meeting and discussed the 2016 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The final meeting with the external auditors occurred in December to conduct the opening meeting for the 2017 audit where it discussed the approach that CliftonLarsonAllen would follow for the audit. The report states that during 2017, no instances of fraud were detected within Washington County government.
