Applying for a Marriage License

You may apply for a marriage license in Washington County regardless of residence or where the ceremony is taking place as long as you are married within the geographical boundaries of Minnesota.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Both applicants must appear in person at one of our Vital Records locations to apply. If one applicant cannot be present, please contact our office for more information.
  • You will be asked to provide the following information for each applicant on the Marriage License Application:
    • Full name
    • Current address
    • Social security number, if you have one
    • Date and place of birth
    • Information regarding any previous marriage(s)
    • Full name you wish to have after marriage
    • The license is valid for six months from the date of application
Effective August 1, 2016 there is no longer a five-day waiting period from the date of application to its' effective date.

Licenses applied for at the Government Center will be issued immediately to the applicants and the marriage may occur on the same day.

Licenses applied for at our License/Service Centers will be issued from the Government Center on the following business day.  Applicants have the option of either picking up their license from the Government Center or having it mailed to them.


The application fee is $115 or $40 if you have obtained pre-marital education as per M.S. 517.08 and present a completed Reduced Marriage Fee Educator’s Statement at the time of application.
