Service and License Centers

Change in Services Due to COVID-19

In an effort to provide a safe environment for the public and county employees, delivery of services provided face-to-face have been modified. Due to limited staff, staff cannot assist walk-in customers at this time.
  • In-person services are available by appointment at the county License and Service Centers.
  • Avoid an appointment and use the drop box or mail service to process select services. This is the fastest way to get your transaction completed and is contact free!

If your driver’s license expires between March 13 and September 30, 2020, please wait to renew. Your license is still valid. See updates below.

Minnesota Updates

Driver’s License & ID Expiration Dates

Driver’s license or ID card that have expired during the peacetime emergency receive an automatic extension on the expiration for two months after the month the peacetime emergency ends. This bill was signed into law by Governor Walz on March 28, 2020. Learn more about the extension.

Real ID Extension

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the REAL ID full enforcement deadline to October 1, 2021. Previously, it was October 1, 2020. If you do not have a Real ID compliant driver’s license or ID card and wish to obtain one, it is recommended you get one as your driver's license expires if it is before October 1, 2021. Learn more about the extension.

Knowledge (Written) and Road Testing

Knowledge and road tests are only available by appointment at a DVS Exam Station. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Schedule an appointment at a DVS Exam Station for a knowledge or road test

Residency Documents for Real ID

A bill recently passed that will make it easier for Minnesotans applying for a REAL ID. Most notably, service centers may now accept a utility bill with two unrelated names, valid hunting or fishing license, cell phone bill, etc. Check
here for the updated residency document list.

Vehicle Registration

Deputy Registrars across the state have still been available to process motor vehicle transactions for customers, including tab renewals. Minnesota has not extended any vehicle registration expiration. You must renew your vehicle tabs before they expire, as always. The fastest way to renew is by using our drop boxes.
