Change in Services Due to COVID-19
In an effort to provide a safe environment for the public and county employees, delivery of services provided face-to-face have been modified. Walk-in service is available in limited capacity based on staffing levels and appointment cancellations.

Minnesota Updates
Driver’s License & ID Expiration Dates
Driver’s license or ID card that have expired during the peacetime emergency receive an automatic extension on the expiration for two months after the month the peacetime emergency ends. This bill was signed into law by Governor Walz on March 28, 2020. Learn more about the extension.
Real ID Extension
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the REAL ID full enforcement deadline to October 1, 2021. Previously, it was October 1, 2020. If you do not have a Real ID compliant driver’s license or ID card and wish to obtain one, it is recommended you get one as your driver's license expires if it is before October 1, 2021. Knowledge (Written) and Road Testing
Knowledge and road tests for Class D licenses are available by appointment at a State of MN - DVS Exam Station. Walk-ins are not accepted.

Residency Documents for Real ID
A bill recently passed that will make it easier for Minnesotans applying for a REAL ID. Most notably, service centers may now accept a utility bill with two unrelated names, valid hunting or fishing license, cell phone bill, etc. Check here for the updated residency document list.

Deputy Registrars across the state have still been available to process motor vehicle transactions for customers, including tab renewals. Minnesota has not extended any vehicle registration expiration. You must renew your vehicle tabs before they expire, as always. The fastest way to renew is by using our drop boxes.
