Composting and Yard Waste

It is illegal to put yard, garden, and tree waste into the garbage. Compost yard waste at home, have it picked up by your trash hauler during seasonal yard waste collection, or bring it to a designated yard waste drop-off site.

Backyard Composting

Backyard composting is a great way to turn waste from your yard and kitchen into a rich organic material that you can use to improve your soil.

Washington County is excited to offer residents $20 off backyard compost bins and rain barrels.

Curbside Pick-up

Some waste haulers pick-up yard waste at the curb. Contact your waste hauler for details.

Compostable Bag Requirements

Yard waste bagged for curbside pickup is required to be in compostable bags, available in both paper and plastic. Compostable bags are available at most home improvement, grocery, and hardware stores.

Residents who use yard waste carts provided by their hauler are not affected.
