The Washington County Attorney’s Office operates a Veterans Program (VP) to handle certain presumptive probation cases in which the defendant is a veteran struggling with the effects of his or her service in a hostile area.
The Veterans Program promotes public safety. The VP supports veterans and their families through a coordinated effort among the veteran services delivery system, community-based services, and the court—thereby leaving no veteran behind. The VP strives to identify veterans, offer them assistance, assess their needs, and help them solve their problems.
The VP is built upon a unique partnership between the criminal justice system, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and local treatment providers. These partners structure treatment and support intervention with the authority and personal involvement of the prosecuting authority.
