The Maintenance Section is responsible for the year-round maintenance of the County's 282-mile highway system. In addition to keeping the highways clear of ice and snow, the maintenance crew pave and patch the highways, regrade gravel roads and shoulders, repair and replace culverts and storm sewers, repair damaged guardrail, control weeds and mow our roadsides.
The Engineering Section is responsible for the planning, design and construction inspection of highway improvement projects. Projects include design and construction of complex four-lane, divided urban highways as well as overlays, crack sealing and seal coat projects. The Engineering Section also performs annual bridge safety inspections and is responsible for maintaining the County's pavement management system.
The Traffic Section is responsible for the design, operation and maintenance of the County's traffic signal system, highway signing, and pavement striping and messages. This section also performs traffic studies, accident analysis and is responsible for permitting all work conducted within highway right-of-way.
The Fleet Maintenance Section is responsible for maintaining all of the vehicles within the department including single- and tandem-axle trucks, graders, dozers, loaders, tractors, heavy and light-duty pick-ups, cars and trailers. This section also maintains the Sheriff's Office vehicles as well as other departments within the county. This section also maintains all of the pieces of equipment used in the department including mowers, chain saws, and hydraulic equipment.
The Washington County Regional Railroad Authority (WCRRA) provides transportation planning and engineering expertise for alternative modes of transportation including commuter rail and light rail transit.
