U.S. Public Land Survey & County Coordinates
The United States Public Land Survey (USPLS) and the County Coordinate System are the foundation for all surveying, platting, land conveyances, and tax parcel mapping in Washington County.
Over 1500 USPLS corners were established in Washington County by U.S. Deputy Surveyors in 1847 and 1848. A majority of these government corners have been maintained and a record of each is on file in the County Surveyor's Office in accordance with Minnesota Statutes.
The Washington County Coordinate System is a ground surface, Transverse Mercator projection on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83/1986). It was derived from the Minnesota State Plane Coordinate System. Values are expressed in U.S. Survey Feet.
Horizontal control reports are available for each township in Washington County. They show coordinate values on USPLS corners and survey control stations.
The Public Land Survey System and the County Coordinate System are also the foundation on which the County's Geographic Information System (GIS) was built. Geographers, engineers, surveyors, and other land professionals perform much of their work by way of these systems.
