ArcView Shapefile Naming Conventions
These shapefile format data layers are stored in a common directory for use by applications developed by the Surveyor's Office. This naming convention conforms to an 8.3 standard by spelling out words eight characters or less and by stripping out all vowels of words more than eight characters.
