Installing Your Car Seat
Installing a car seat is no easy task -- that's why 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly. Remember these important tips:
- Before installing any restraint, read the instructions carefully. The instructions provide information on weight limitations, and show how to properly install the restraint. In addition, each vehicle owner's manual provides information specific to the vehicle safety belt system.
- NEVER put a rear facing car seat in front seat of the vehicle equipped with a passenger side airbag. Children under 13 should ride in the back.
- Understand how your seat belt system works. Knowing how the belt "locks" will ensure a tight fit. Your seat belt system may require the use a locking clip. Please refer to your vehicle owner's manual for this information.
- Your vehicle may be equipped with the LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). For assistance with this installation, see the the website resource above.
- Get a tight fit -- the seat should not move more than on inch at the belt path. It often takes 2 people and several attempts to get the seat in securely.
- Lap only seat belts work fine with car seats, but cannot be used with booster seats. They are also not the safest way to buckle older children or adults.
