Tornado Information for Kids

Do You Know About Tornados?

We all like to look at clouds. Some clouds are white and fluffy. Some clouds are dark. Rain comes from dark clouds. Rain helps us. It makes flowers grow and fills up rivers and lakes. What else does rain do for us?

When it rains on a warm day, you may hear thunder and see lightning. The wind may blow. Sometimes if the wind is blowing very hard, a tornado can come.

A tornado is a big, dark cloud that touches the ground. It looks like a big funnel. In the tornado, a very strong wind blows around and around in a circle. The wind is so strong, it can blow down trees. The wind can pick cars and trucks up off the ground. Sometimes it even blows down houses.

A tornado is very loud. It sounds like a big train or a jet plane. It can be very scary.

But tornadoes only last a short time. You can go somewhere safe when there is a tornado nearby.

How Do You Know When A Tornado Is Coming?

Weathermen watch the weather. They tell you on the radio or TV if it is a warm or cold day or if it is rainy or sunny. Sometimes they-can tell you if a tornado is coming. They use these words:

A TORNADO WATCH means a tornado may happen. What should you do?

A TORNADO WARNING means someone has seen a tornado. You should get to a safe place.

Where Are Safe Places?

You should stay away from windows.

At school, your teacher will tell you where to go. You should go to a hallway and get down on the floor near a wall. You should curl up in a ball and put your hands over your head.

At your house, a safe place to go is your basement. Do you have a basement?

If you do not have a basement, you can go on the ground floor. Go somewhere where there are no windows. It is very important to get away from windows if a tornado comes. You can get on the floor under a table and curl up like a ball. Put your hands over your head.
