Emergency Management

All-Hazard Mitigation Plan

Washington County’s Effort to Prepare for Hazards

Washington County Emergency Management is currently updating the All-Hazard Mitigation Plan – a countywide plan required by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This plan is required to be in place prior to receiving funds under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). This plan is aimed at helping cities and townships in the county to mitigate (prepare) for a variety of hazards such as flooding, tornadoes, and terrorism before they occur. The purpose of the plan is to reduce the loss of lives and property damage in the event of a hazard occurring in one or more communities of the county. The All-Hazard Mitigation Plan includes a list of goals, objectives and strategies for the county to better prepare and coordinate efforts for disasters. This will help reduce costs when hazards do occur. By being as prepared as possible for various hazards, the county, cities and townships intend to reduce costs and save lives.

This multi-jurisdictional plan includes a cooperative planning process, requiring input from elected officials, planners and/or emergency management persons from local, county and state levels along with public participation.

Sections of the draft plan are now available for the public to read, review and provide comments or suggestions.”

Washington County will continue to update the plan and submit a final version to the state and FEMA in the spring of 2012. Thank you in advance to any and all who choose to be a part of this process. If you are interested in viewing any of the maps mentioned in the plan, please contact Kelli Matzek (see contact information below).
