Adult Mental Health

Mental health disorders affect day-to-day life and can happen anytime in one's life. One in five Americans has a diagnosis of a mental health disorder each year. Often people with substance abuse issues also have at least one mental health disorder. Eighty to ninety percent of mental health disorders can be effectively treated with medication and/or other therapies. However, fewer than half of adults and less than one third of children get help. Anxiety and depression are the most common disorders and often occur together. Untreated depression is the number-one cause of suicide. Suicides were the leading cause of injury-related deaths for Washington County in the 1990s, ahead of motor vehicle and fall related deaths (Source: 2003 Washington County Community Health Assessment).

If you or someone you know is in a crisis, call Washington County's Mental Health 24/7 Crisis Line 651-777-5222 or 1-800-273-TALK.
