Drivers License Information


If you have a question about your driving record, or the receipt of your license, please call the State of Minnesota at 651-296-6911. For renewals, present your drivers license. For lost or stolen licenses you may need to present an original certified birth certificate providing your name is the same and a Social Security card. If there are no changes that need to be made regarding the information on your last driver's license, it is not necessary to bring any proof of identification.

If your name has changed since birth bring all supporting original documents:

  • marriage certificate.
  • divorce decree.
  • and passport for identification.

 

Written tests are given by the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services at Valley Ridge Mall in Stillwater on Wednesday only from 8 to 11:15 a.m. or 12:30 to 3:45 p.m. Road tests are given by appointment only, or by calling 651-284-1000, and requesting the Stillwater License Center location.

Effective Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012. the Forest Lake, Stillwater and Woodbury License Centers will be able to accept applications for first time Minnesota State ID cards and first time driver license applications once the written test has been taken at one of the State Exam sites. This includes applications for first time instructional permits. The driver license instructional manual is available on the state website http://www.mndriveinfo.org. All License Centers are able to process applications for the renewal of driver licenses, instructional permits and State ID cards. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, check, MasterCard and Discover with a 2.45 percent onvenience fee if you choose to charge your transaction. Visa is not accepted.
 

For New Residents to Minnesota

To apply for a Minnesota Drivers' License for the first time, the applicant must present a valid driver's license from another state and another form of government issued identification, such as a certified birth certificate or valid passport. If the name is different on the government issued identification document a certified copy of the name change, such as a marriage certificate, is also required. A written test and vision test are required.

The Woodbury and Forest Lake License Centers do not administer the Drivers' License Test, but they do have the study manuals and a list of the nearby testing locations.

Acceptable forms of payment are cash, check, MasterCard and Discover. A 2.45 percent convenience fee is added to the transaction amount if you choose to use your credit card or debit card. Visa is not accepted. 

Voter Registration

You may register to vote at the time of application for a Driver's License or by obtaining a voter registration application at any county office.
