What's New in the Parks?

Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park

A master plan amendment will be developed during late 2006 and early 2007

Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park has seen many changes over the past few years, including the addition of over 2 miles of paved trails, a fishing pier, and the construction of the South Service Center. It's a park that is rapidly growing in popularity.

In response to these changes, the Washington County Parks Division will be updating the park's master plan. The planning process will review existing and planned development, and will investigate new program areas. The plan will identify the future course of development and natural resource management within Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park.

Big Marine Park Reserve

Preparations for developing a beach, boat launch and picnic area are underway

Washington County has been acquiring land for the Big Marine Park Reserve since 1988. Until recently, the County did not have enough contiguous property to begin development of the park. The County now has enough land and funds to begin development of Phase I.

Lake Elmo Park Reserve

A master plan amendment was completed in 2006

Lake Elmo Park Reserve is a 2165 acre park that currently offers camping, swimming, boating, fishing, natural resource restoration, etc.; along with paved, turf and cross-country ski trails. An updated master plan for the park was completed in 2006, which identified existing park development, evaluated and located remaining planned items, and investigated potential new facilities. The plan identifies the future course of development and natural resource management in Lake Elmo Park Reserve.

The master planning process for this park is complete. Please click

Cottage Grove Ravine and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Parks

Fishing piers were installed at both of these parks in 2006

SCB Fishing Pier
The Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park fishing pier was installed on Ravine Lake with the cooperation of the Minnesota DNR Trails and Waterways Unit and the Minnesota DNR 'Fishing in the Neighborhood' (FIN) Program. The walkway was built by youth from 'Tree Trust'.

The St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park fishing pier (left) was installed on the harbor adjacent to the St. Croix River. When the boat launch dock in the park was replaced, park staff modified the old dock into a fishing pier.

Lake Elmo Park Reserve

A new restroom facility was built near the play area in 2006

A new restroom facility with a small attached shelter was built near the large 'destination' play structure in Lake Elmo Park Reserve. This restroom facility replaces the portable toilets that were used for many years at the site. In addition to the building, trees and a drinking fountain were also added.

St. Croix Valley Trail

A master plan was completed in 2005

St. Croix Valley Trail Search Area

Over the years, representatives from Washington County Parks, Denmark Township, the City of Afton, the Minnesota DNR, and others have discussed the potential of a trail in the south St. Croix River Valley. The trail would connect downtown Afton with Afton State Park, St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, Carpenter Nature Center, Point Douglas Park, and Prescott, WI.

During 2004 and 2005, a public master planning process took place to identify an alignment for this proposed trail. The master plan is now complete. Construction of the trail is still several years away.
