What's New in the Parks?

Big Marine Fishing Pier

As of fall 2009, a 100-foot, handicap accessible fishing pier was installed at Big Marine Park Reserve. The facility is the only public fishing pier on the 1,800-acre Big Marine Lake and represents the best place to introduce children to the sport of fishing. Big Marine Lake is an excellent fishery with healthy populations of panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye.

Fishing poles and tackle are available at the park’s contact station. Simply stop by the building, check out the fishing equipment and let the fun begin. Fishing in the Neighborhood (FIN) fishing equipment is also available at Lake Elmo Park Reserve and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park. The Big Marine contact station also sells bait.

Program and Picnic area

Eagle Scout Patrick Doughty and a group of scouts completed an amphitheater, walking path, and picnicking site around the Ski Shelter at Lake Elmo Park Reserve. This is one of the many Eagle Projects found within the park system.

This area is open for the public use and serves as a great location for scouts and other groups to gather. The parks division has already used this amphitheater as an area for programming. This winter, the area was used for the Solstice Ski event where 200 tiki torches lit the trails for nighttime use.
