Square Lake Park

Square Lake Park is designated as a Regional "Special Recreation Feature" by the Metropolitan Council, because of Square Lake's outstanding water quality. The lake has some of the clearest waters in Minnesota, and draws scuba divers and swimmers from throughout the Metropolitan Region.

Park Hours are 7 a.m. until one-half hour after sunset.

Vehicle Permits are required on all vehicles entering the park.

Boat Launch

The boat launch is open from 6 a.m. to 1/2 hour after sunset, and it accesses Square Lake. The launch is also open in the winter for ice fishing access.

Be aware that there is water surface zoning in effect for Square Lake. There is a restricted speed zone, which lies between the 40-foot depth contour of the lake and the shoreline, and an open speed zone, which covers the center of the lake (water more than 40 feet deep). This 40-foot depth contour, which serves as the dividing line between the restricted and open speed zones, is marked with buoys. The restrictions for each area follow:

Restricted Speed Zone (100 acres):

5 mph speed limit on all motorized watercraft at all times

Open Speed Zone (95 acres):

Open speed hours are from noon to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays - at all other times, a 5 mph speed limit is in effect

During the above open speed hours, there is no speed limit on motorized watercraft; however, all motorized watercraft shall travel in a counterclockwise direction

Fishing Pier

Square Lake Park has a fishing pier that is on the east side of Square Lake near the picnic area and beach. Parking, drinking water, and restrooms are available nearby.

Picnic Area

Available year round.
Located in a shaded grassy area adjacent to the beach.
Tables and pedestal-mounted grills are scattered throughout the area.
Water and rest rooms are available from May 1 through Oct. 1.

Swimming Beach

The clear-water swimming area includes 950 linear feet of sandy beach. Clean rest rooms, changing rooms, and vending machines are available in a nearby beach building. A grassy area provides picnicking with tables and grills.

Beach Rules

Organized groups require a special use permit for use of the swimming facilities.

Children 6 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult while in the water.

Swimmers are responsible for their own health and safety.

Parents or guardians have a responsibility for children under their care.

Children must be directly supervised by an adult.

Visitors may not use the beach during non-operating hours.

Alcoholic beverages, including 3.2 beer, are prohibited.

Pets are not allowed in the park.

The use of tobacco products is not allowed within 100 feet of the beach.

Glass containers are not permitted.

Coast Guard approved Types I, II, III, or V personal flotation devices are allowed but a parent should be within arms reach.

Parking allowed in designated lots only.

Diapers must be covered with rubber/plastic pants.
