Tips for Parents...

to keep children reading
  • Begin reading to children early in their lives.
  • Allow children to choose books that interest them.
  • Read aloud to each other to hear and enjoy the words.
  • Encourage children to talk about what they are reading for comprehension and sharing.
  • Read every day, whether it's 10 minutes or 110 minutes; schedule the time if necessary.
  • Remove as many distractions as possible -- TV, radio, etc.
  • Keep a supply of reading materials around the house.
  • Take a book with you wherever you go, or listen to books on audio cassettes.
  • Let children see you enjoy reading.
  • Give a favorite book as a gift and encourage your child to do the same.
  • Visit your library regularly and choose from the variety of materials available.
  • Select a special shelf to hold library materials.
  • Encourage children to join the library's summer reading program.
  • Support reading for fun.
  • And, yes, it's OK to reread that favorite book.
