Early Literacy Tips for Parents

What is early literacy? Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school.

How can I help my child with literacy? You can help your child learn important skills now so they can become good readers.

Experts in the literacy field have identified six pre-reading skills children must learn in order to learn to read.

At storytimes throughout the County, librarians are promoting the six pre-reading skills.  Attend storytimes at your local library to hear how the reader emphasizes the skills, and listen, also, for parent tips on how you can work with your child on developing the skills.

To find a list of books that will help your child develop a particular skill, click on the name of the skill below....

Print Motivation -- Being interested in and enjoying books
Phonological Awareness -- Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words
Vocabulary -- Knowing the names of things
Narrative Skills -- Being able to describe things and events, and tell stories
Print Awareness -- Noticing print, knowing how to handle a book, and knowing how to follow the words on a page
Letter Knowledge -- Knowing letters are different from each other; knowing the names of letters; knowing the sounds of letters; recognizing letters everywhere
