The University of Adelaide, Australia, provides access to classic works of literature, philosophy, science, history and exploration and travel.  Works are formatted for ease of reading on a computer screen or downloading to an ereader compatible withePub software.

Internet Archive
The Internet Archive provides free access to historical collections that exist in digital format including texts, audio, moving images, software and archived web pages.

Open Library
Open Library seeks to create one web page for every book ever published. It includes full-text access (when available) to public domain titles.

Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg is the first and largest single collection of free eBooks.  Some titles are available in formats that can be downloaded to ereaders.
