ATTENTION COURT CUSTOMERS:
Washington County Court Administration, State Judicial Branch will be closed on Tuesday mornings effective April 8, 2008. Counter services and public phone lines will be unavailable from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., however, court will still be in session during this time. A drop box is located at the Government Center courts area, on the first floor outside of the metal detection site on Tuesday mornings. Cash should not accompany any payments or filings placed in the drop-box – checks only.
Normal business hours for the Court are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of Tuesday mornings.
PLEASE NOTE: The Cottage Grove Satellite Office will close permanently effective July 1, 2008. Newport, St. Paul Park, Woodbury, and Cottage Grove cases will be processed at the Washington County Government Center in Stillwater after that date. Hearing Officer services will remain available at the Washington County Service Center - Cottage Grove (13000 Ravine Parkway S., Cottage Grove).
Washington County Court (State of Minnesota Judicial Branch) places a high focus on access and public service. Unfortunately, budget realities won't allow us to continue that level of service.

The Department of Court Administration is responsible for carrying out the non-judicial functions of the court including:
- Management of the jury
- Guardian ad Litem Program
- Court finances
- Fine collections
- Case flow management of all civil, criminal, traffic, juvenile, family and probate matters
- Records management
In addition, Court Administration provides a wide range of services to the public, judges, attorneys, agencies and other members of the judicial branch.
The Court Administrator:
- Develops and implements all policies, programs and procedures for the Office of Court Administration
- Oversees all activities and functions of Court Administration and its employees
- Administers personnel regulations of the County and the provisions of collective bargaining agreements
- Approves and administers records retention/destruction policy
- Ensures security of all court records and exhibits
- Oversees administration of the court departmental budget.
The Clerk of District Court, known as the Court Administrator, is a public official; the office is created by Article VI, Section 13, of the constitution of the State of Minnesota. Appointment of the Court Administrator is by the Judges of the Tenth Judicial District with the authority to act as set forth in Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 485.
Washington County has court in Stillwater. Ten judges are assigned to the County. Each is supported by a law clerk and a court reporter.
Court-related services include working with the
Volunteer Guardian ad Litem Program,
Law Library, and providing secretarial services for the judiciary.
A guardian ad litem provides advocacy for children by gathering information to make recommendations in court regarding their best interest. They conduct interviews and observe the children and significant people in their lives. They review social service, medical, school, psychological and criminal records and reports. They attend meetings with the other professionals involved with the children and their families. They are advocates for needed services. They outline options and make written and oral recommendations in court regarding the short- and long-term best interests of the children. They monitor court ordered plans to ensure the children's best interests are being met.
