Truancy Definitions

Continuing Truant:

When a child has been absent without lawful excuse for one or more class periods on three or more days during the school year, they are legally considered to be a "continuing truant."

At this level early intervention attempts are made by the school making efforts to resolve the truancy issues. The parent(s)/guardian will receive an Attendance Intervention letter from the County Attorney.

Habitual Truant:

When a child has been absent without lawful excuse on one or more class periods on seven or more days during the school year, they are legally considered to be a "habitual truant." When a child is habitually truant, court action can be immediately sought.

For students ages 12-15 Diversion Services are provided.

For students ages 16-17, Court Action can be requested, after 14 days with truancy.
