Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI)
A person may be considered to have a serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) if they have been hospitalized for psychiatric care two or more times in the last two years; have been committed by a court as a mentally ill person; or have significant impairment in functioning due to a specific mental illness diagnosis such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, or borderline personality disorder and are considered to be reasonably likely for psychiatric hospitalization according to a mental health professional.
