Drivers License Information
If you have a question about your driving record, or the receipt of your license, please call the State of Minnesota at 651-296-6911. For renewals, present your drivers license. For lost or stolen licenses you may need to present an original certified birth certificate providing your name is the same and a Social Security card. If there are no changes that need to be made regarding the information on your last driver's license, it is not necessary to bring any proof of identification.

If your name has changed since birth bring all supporting original documents:
  • Marriage certificate
  • Divorce decree
  • Passport for identification

Testing
Written tests are given by the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services at Valley Ridge Mall in Stillwater on Wednesday only from 8 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Road tests are given by appointment only, or by calling 651-284-1000 and requesting the Stillwater License Center location. The Woodbury and Forest Lake License Centers do not administer the drivers' license test.

ID Applications
The Forest Lake, Stillwater, and Woodbury License Centers accept applications for first time Minnesota State ID cards and first time driver license applications once the written test has been taken at one of the State Exam sites. This includes applications for first time instructional permits.

The driver license instructional manual is available on the state website. All License Centers are able to process applications for the renewal of driver licenses, instructional permits and state ID cards. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover with a 2.45% convenience fee if you choose to charge your transaction.

For New Residents to Minnesota
To apply for a Minnesota Drivers' License for the first time, the applicant must present a valid driver's license from another state and another form of government issued identification, such as a certified birth certificate or valid passport. If the name is different on the government issued identification document a certified copy of the name change, such as a marriage certificate, is also required. A written test and vision test are required.

Acceptable forms of payment are cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. A 2.45% convenience fee is added to the transaction amount if you choose to use your credit card or debit card.
